American Girl presents a striking portrait of a topless Black woman, smiling with unguarded joy. Drawing visual reference from the spontaneous Polaroid portraits of Andy Warhol and Terry Richardson, the image reclaims the casual immediacy of that style while recontextualizing it through the lens of Black femininity.
Where past eras have often framed African American women’s bodies through a hypersexualized or exploitative gaze—particularly in media from the 1990s and early 2000s—this work offers an alternative: vulnerability without objectification, beauty without performance.
The subject is bare, but she is not exposed. Her smile is not a seduction. In American Girl, joy itself becomes a radical gesture. The image resists spectacle, instead offering the viewer a glimpse of softness and autonomy rarely afforded to Black women in visual culture.
