In Strange Fruit, the artist reimagines a shot from the 1999 film American Beauty, replacing the bed of roses with magnolia leaves and blossoms—a deliberate and potent substitution. Suspended in an aerial composition, the Aubri lies with serenity and softness, her gaze turned upward. Beauty, comfort, and innocence radiate from her form, yet the imagery is layered with historical tension.
Magnolia trees, ubiquitous in the Southern United States, are here reclaimed and reframed. Once sites of unspeakable racial violence—used in lynchings throughout the Confederacy—their blooms now cradle the subject in a scene that is as alluring as it is unsettling.
The title nods to Billie Holiday’s iconic protest song, anchoring the work in a lineage of Black artistic resistance. With Strange Fruit, the artist invites us to confront the contradictions embedded in the Black American experience: the simultaneous presence of beauty and brutality, desire and danger, memory and myth.
